Trades under the title ‘Medium to Long Term’ are in HIGH demand and can obtain residency anywhere in Australia. They usually require a LOT of POINTS before qualifying.
Trades under the title ‘Short Term’ are in LOW demand and can only obtain residency through the invitation of a state such as Tasmania or South Australia, or through a sponsor in rural area. Trades under the title ‘Regional’ are in RURAL demand and can only obtain residence in rural areas.
Point Visas
VISA 189 (FEDERAL)
It is the ‘gold standard’ because it gives you permanent residence and allows you to live anywhere in Australia. They call it ‘the independent’ because you do not depend on the support of any state to obtain it. This visa is only for trades in high demand. In June 2020 you needed 65 points to get an invitation. Obtaining it is very difficult.
VISA 190 (STATE)
It is the ‘silver standard’ because although this visa is permanent residence, it forces you to live in the state that invited you for 2 years.
To apply for this visa you need a state to support you and before giving you the support the state will require you to live there for a time. High or low demand trades can apply to this visa. You need at least 60 points from you to apply.
VISA 491 (REGIONAL)
It is the ‘bronze standard’ because this visa is not permanent residence but can end in it after you live and work for 3 years outside of Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney.
To apply for this visa you need a rural area to support you and before providing support, the rural area will require you to live there for a while. You need at least 50 points from you.
