Postgraduate Visa Australia

The 485 graduate visa is a work visa with unlimited employment rights that Australia grants to some students studying certain courses in Australia. Know everything you need to know if you want to apply for this visa.

Requirements for the Postgraduate Visa in Australia

⚠️ IMPORTANT: The information that we will present to you now IS OF A GENERAL CHARACTER and is based on the list of trades in demand as of the date of publication. Federal and state governments frequently review the trades that their respective economies need and based on this they introduce, change, and remove trades from their lists. This can happen at ANY time and without prior announcement.

Usually you must physically study in Australia for a minimum of 16 months. The course or combination of courses must be registered in CRICOS for at least 92 weeks.
English Studies (ELICOS) do not count towards the total time necessary to obtain the 485 visa. As a result of COVID-19, the Australian government has indicated that it will count the time of studies carried out outside Australia towards the total necessary to obtain the 485 visa .

There are 2 different pathways

GRADUATE WORK (GWS)

This channel is for those who studied vocational courses (VET) such as certificates, diplomas and advanced diplomas.
VET courses must be HIGHLY RELEVANT to a HIGH demand trade (on the medium to long term list).

Examples:
Carpentry and construction = Carpenter
Kitchen and hospitality = Chef
Automotive Mechanics = Mechanic
Manufacturing Engineering = Welder
Before applying through this channel, you must launch a provisional validation in a high demand job.

The visa will last 18 months.

POST STUDY WORK (PSW)

This channel is for those who studied higher education as a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate. It doesn’t matter what you’ve studied as long as you’ve done it for 2 years.

You will need to apply through the GWS channel if you ever applied for a student visa before November 5, 2011 or if you studied a Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate.

This visa will last 24 months if you studied in Brisbane, Melbourne or Sydney, or it will last between 36 to 48 months if you did ALL of the study (not even part of it) in regional areas such as Adelaide, Gold Coast, Darwin or Perth.

How long does the immigration response take?

Approximately 1 to 5 months after application. When your student visa expires, you enter the bridge visa A (BVA) until you receive a decision.

Can I get the Postgraduate Visa if I studied a vocational course in Marketing, Management or Leadership?

In most cases the answer is ‘NO’, since immigration GENERALLY considers that these fields of study ARE NOT HIGHLY RELEVANT to a profession on the HIGH DEMAND list such as Engineer, Accountant, Programmer, Architect or Economist, etc.

In a few isolated cases, Immigration has previously issued graduate visas to engineers who validated their degrees with Engineers Australia and studied for diplomas in Project and Program Management. Today these requests are USUALLY REJECTED.
